Aircraft
Sierra Tango Aviation currently uses a 1942 Aeronca L-3 for the majority of our flight training. We feel this is an excellent aircraft for beginning pilots, advanced pilots looking to improve their skills, and for tailwheel conversions.
- Simple systems allow more focus on improving basic flying skills
- Excellent feedback feel during maneuvers
- Tandem seating allows great visibility out of both sides of the aircraft
- Encourages proper takeoff and landing technique unlike tricycle geared aircraft
- Promotes proper rudder use in the air for coordinated flight
- Taildraggers are just more fun!
The L-3, along with other "L-birds", were used for artillery fire direction, courier service, front-line liaison and pilot training. Our L-3C started its civillian life in California after being declared surplus by the Surplus Property Act of 1944.
